My Thoughts
Henry, my Grandfather, was the oldest child in their current family situation. The Census showed that his Mother, had lost 2 children but it didn't say when. How that impacted her and the entire family is hard to imagine. If he was her 1st child, that means she was 22 when she had him. She had married at the age of 19 so possibly there had been a child/baby prior to Henry.
His Father had hit the 40 mark; or mid-life as we now call it, and his Mother wasn't far behind. The Census showed that they both worked in the place they resided, so I'm thinking that means they were possibly the superintendents of sorts. Another option could of been to fix up the place in liu of rent. I was surprised to see her job title as janitor. Suppose it fits though since housekeeper would of been designated as a person who worked for a specific family or that "just" kept up their own individual dwelling unit.
I wonder if the parents received any funds for their work in the place, Being that they had 6 mouths to feed, I'm sure they needed cash. I wonder too if Henry worked at all, maybe as a paper-boy or some other similar teen type job. Possibly actual cash was obtained through the boarders listed on the Census. Although it didn't list any occupation for them. If they were true borders they would of most certainly been require to pay rent &/or do labor in exchange for room & board.
*I may come back & add additional thoughts.
